  • Contenu : 2 fils conducteurs Robbins ; 1x enfile-aiguille; 1x aiguille;

2 or 4 Robbins Conductive Thread 65-130ft/20-60m for Arduino Lilypad with Needle Threader

Fully tested and confirmed the conductive thread works

Let me start off by saying the current listing description, title, and pictures are full of discrepancies! The title says 2pcs bobbins but then the description says "Package: 2x or 4x robbins conductive thread; 1x needle threader; 1x needle" I received 4x bobbins, 1x needle threader, 1x needle...but it sounds like you could receive 2x bobbins(??). The seller needs to specify which is it, 2x or 4x bobbins, otherwise expect lots of frustrated customers! The picture also shows the thread as almost brass color but it is in fact SILVER (grey). The resistance of the thread is also listed as 2Ω/ft in the title but then the description says <4 Ω/ft. Don't bother trying to figure out which it is, both are wrong LOL... I go into the testing I did to confirm ACTUAL resistance of the thread below. Thankfully the product itself is great despite the listing errors.
....
Before testing this conductive thread I wanted to confirm what the actual length is on the bobbin. I unspooled the entire thing (see pic) and measured it foot-by-foot at just over 47ft! Don't do this by the way, it's a pain to re-spool. The listing description says 35ft, so this was a nice surprise. It's fairly flexible like actual fabric threading too (see video demo).
....
Testing the thread's conductivity was done with no load, light load, and a heavy load using my Fluke multimeter and bench power supply. I cut a piece exactly 12in [1ft] long and taped it to a ruler for the duration of testing (see pics). The thread measured ~9.6 ohms at 12in [1ft] and ~4.8 ohms at 6in, which seems to be a consistent ~0.8 ohms / inch under no load. For powered testing I needed to prep the ends of the thread so I could connect a load. I decided to use conductive wire glue (what I had on-hand) by dipping the thread ends in, then crimping it onto a connector (see pics). I let the wire glue cure for a couple hours before testing. Under a light load (LED) the voltage drop across the thread was 0.179V @19mA which gives ~9.4 ohms [1ft] of resistance. This closely matches the no load measurement of ~9.6, so the thread is consistent! Next up was switching to a heavy load, a 4 ohm power resistor. I increased the current slowly to 200mA and was surprised to see it not only kept ~9.6 ohms [1ft], but also wasn't that warm to the touch. I left it for several minutes at 200mA and it never got that warm (in open air). I then increased to 500mA and felt the thread heat up, not hot, but definitely noticeable and the resistance was increasing >10 ohms (see pic). That was close to 4W, impressive. Just to be thorough, I pushed it to 600mA and that's when the thread started to flex and get hot. Don't do that! Based on those tests, I wouldn't push this thread much past 200mA, especially since it likely won't be in open air to cool off.
....
Overall this conductive thread does work well. It holds up under higher loads and will definitely handle LEDs fine. I would recommend using a conductive wire glue or conductive silver epoxy to give this thread the best chance of working well (can easily be found on Amazon for <$15). Keep in mind this is bare thread wire, you have to separate the (+) and (-) thread paths, otherwise it will short out! I would give this 5 stars if the seller sticks to 4x bobbins and corrects the listing errors, otherwise it's a solid 4-star.
